SOS BOOK (Chapter 4.12) Effective executive control – a strategy for success
How do we achieve optimal executive control over the biological super-computer in our brain? How do we harness the immense power & resource of our whole mind? What are we meant to do with all that potential?
OUR BRAIN IS A TERMINAL TO ACCESS AN EXTENDED WEB.
We are essentially the CEO of the super-computer that is our brain. But our computer is just a terminal to access much wider internet-like web. This web is full of information & valuable resources. That web is called our Extended Mind which connects with the Universal Mind!
Unfortunately, no-one has given us the operating instructions. There were no classes for this at college or business school! If we were to find these instructions somewhere, would we even trust them? Would we actually study and use them? Imagine how big or complex that manual might be!
WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EXECUTIVE CONTROL OVER OUR MIND.
As CEO of our mind, we have a considerable responsibility. This requires that we understand how our whole corporate organization works including all its separate divisions. This includes appreciating the strengths and weaknesses of each division. We introduced this important concept of ‘executive control’ in the previous sub chapter 4.11. Since executive control is such a complex topic, would an instruction manual help us?
MOST PEOPLE REJECT SEEKING INSTRUCTION OR HELP.
Most people dislike reading instruction manuals. They would rather learn as they go! They presume that this will be sufficient. Some don’t want to appear inadequate by requesting additional help. Many are just fearful of trying anything new, and others are just lazy.
Most feel they don’t need a manual because they have already been using this ‘equipment’ all their life. So they think they already know best! But do they really? Our apparent familiarity with this precious and sophisticated technology camouflages the true situation.
OUR BODY IS JUST OUR BRAIN’S MOBILE POWER SUPPLY.
Let’s look at a few of the consequences of ignoring the instruction manual. Many spend their whole life preoccupied, just with the computer’s power supply – that’s the human body! They either want to build their body up or try to slim it down. They regularly spend time decorating it or adorning it with fine fashion. Many even compete or compare themselves, one power supply against another.
OUR SENSES CAN BECOME A MERE DISTRACTION.
Sometimes, instead of just obsessing with the power supply, we become engrossed with the computer’s peripherals – our five senses! We can create all kinds of internal movies and drama with this high quality visual, audio, and sensory input. We use our supercomputer for producing 3d videos or even video games, where we can feature and be the star. Plus we keep watching the movie reruns time and time again.
OUR BRAIN CAN ACCESS THE RESOURCES OF THE UNIVERSE.
Our human bodies are mere housing for something much more valuable – our brain and our mind. But our biological supercomputer is just an access terminal for something FAR GREATER. It connects to our Extended Mind which in turn has further access to the Universal Mind. This means our brain potentially has access to all the resources of the entire Universe! Just imagine what you could do with that!
THIS INCREDIBLE POTENTIAL IS SADLY OFTEN WASTED.
We usually set our super-computer’s functionality to the lowest levels and then just idle. Plus, we run most of our life on auto-pilot. So, we idle, and give away our control. We give away our power & potential! We fail to utilize and develop our strongest resource. We fail to use our top management position as CEO to reach our full capacity and make a real difference for those around us.
WHAT DOES BEING A GOOD CEO LOOK LIKE?
Clear, definitive, executive action is what it takes to be a good CEO. This includes having the correct goal and a plan, as well as potential strategies to put that plan into action. We need commitment, courage, compassion & wisdom.
But how would this work in practice? We could start by becoming:
· more aware of our own thinking, our commands, and the consequences.
· more mindful of all we think, feel and do.
· more clear about the reasons for our choices.
· more conscious of any bias or habit that’s crept in.
· more impartial in our observations of ourselves and others.
· more wary of suboptimal or compensatory behaviour.
AIM TO INCREASE YOUR LEVEL OF CONSCIOUS DECISION MAKING.
When appropriate, we can take back control over decision making from our subconscious mind. We should be conscious of when we delegate control and why. We aim to increase the percentage of the day when we are fully conscious and aware of our decision making. Most importantly we watch out for self-sabotage and the pervasive influence of the Ego. It’s that simple!
DON’T GET DISTRACTED BY ALL THE DRAMA.
But too often we just don’t apply the simple action plan above! Instead, we get distracted by all the minutiae and the trivia of our daily existence. We get caught up in the drama of current events. Plus all the relationship issues and personal powerplays.
DON’T ACCIDENTLY HAND OVER CONTROL TO YOUR EGO.
If we neglect our role as CEO, our ego will take over our subconscious mind and then run most of our life. Without us really noticing, we can unintentionally hand over authority and control to our ego. We become CEO in name only! The real power has been subtly shifted to the ego-mind!
Through all of the above mistakes, we neglect our mind’s higher facility. We avoid our true capacity and deny our unique potential.
ACCESS YOUR IDEAL DESTINY THROUGH THE EXTENDED MIND.
In general, we only run our supercomputer at about 1% of our true potential. This prevents us from creating a joyful and meaningful life. Sometimes we increase this to say 10% when we are fuelled with creative passion. However, if we use our resources FULLY, we can discover what future destiny is best for us, and how to get there. Then we can design a whole new personal reality. We can build a grand new future using our super-computer and its Extended Mind connections.
WE HAVE A HIDDEN TREASURE CHEST & WE HOLD THE KEY.
But sadly, we usually don’t appreciate our true inner power. We don’t actively pursue our potential. Even if we have some vague notion of this, we don’t really know what to do. Understanding these principles is the key to unlocking our whole destiny. It’s like we are sitting on a huge treasure chest of gold bullion all our life, but we never open the box. We don’t even realise it is all ours. We don’t realise we already have the key.
WILL YOU COMMIT TO THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITY?
Achieving all this does not require large intellect or fancy education. But we must first realise the need for change, and then accept responsibility for this. The key to unlocking our vast untapped potential is learning to control and drive our brilliant facility of mind. We must realize we are essentially the CEO and hence totally responsible for our success or failure. This executive function is an essential strategy for success.
But taking executive control can be exhausting unless we do this efficiently. So how do we increase our productivity? This strategy for further success follows next in subchapter 4.13
