SOS BOOK - Chapter 1.13 Don't just give up
WE YEARN FOR INNER-PEACE… Inwardly we long for inner contentment & fulfillment in our lives. This state can ONLY be ACHIEVED THROUGH SELF-REALIZATION & TRUE SELF-EXPRESSION. This means understanding our inner-most needs & releasing our true potential.
A different way of conveying this concept is that: Lasting happiness and inner peace can only be generated from deep within our self, not from the outside world.
FINALLY, SOME OF US SEE THIS TRUTH. Some achieve this realization! For us to awaken to this, it may take one crisis or many. Sometimes a whole lifetime of suffering or more is required. Very few come to this realization without a major crisis… These are indeed very perceptive individuals.
This leads to the next important life lesson (No. 44):
WE ALONE CREATE OUR OWN FULFILLMENT
To embrace the need for deep fulfillment, and to pursue this, is a major achievement. It’s important to emphasize this process happens within ourselves, by ourselves. It’s done by changing our own perceptions or beliefs about almost everything.
This doesn’t occur just by chance. WE DO IT TO OURSELVES & BY OURSELVES. This realization can be profound. It can be quite a shock to realize that
WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CREATING OUR OWN HAPPINESS & FULFILLMENT.
This can however become a powerful motivating force. What then should we do? How do we start changing ourselves ? That is what this ‘SOS book’ is about. The process by which we Stop Our Suffering.
Unfortunately for many of us, integrating these important concepts into our life may still be difficult. The realization may not be fully sustained. We might understand but pretend not to, out of fear or doubt. For some hidden reason, we prefer not to proceed. Or we have an intellectual realization but revert to old patterns of thinking & behaving. WE USUALLY STAY IN OUR COMFORT ZONE. What a loss! What a waste of a unique opportunity to live as we’re really meant to.
This is life lesson No. 45:
WE EASILY REVERT BACK TO OUR OLD WAYS
Instead of taking responsibility for our happiness, WE AVOID THIS. We revert to our old ways. Back to using distractions & temporary pleasures. We avoid facing the real issue and just try to ‘get through’ the next day, the next week or the next year. We dislike or fear change. We procrastinate! WE PUT OFF CHANGING OURSELVES.
Instead of experiencing LASTING JOY and REAL FULFILLMENT we succumb to transient pleasures with their addictive ‘highs’. We settle for various temporary aids! They include social stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol or nicotine. We also utilize many comforting behavioral patterns & over-indulge these.
WE ‘SELF-MEDICATE’ WITH ALMOST ANY AGENT OR BEHAVIOUR THAT GIVES A TEMPORARY OR ADDICTIVE HIGH.
This becomes our preferred strategy. But it’s only a temporary compensation. It’s not the ‘real thing’! This strategy doesn’t lead to inner peace, contentment and fulfillment. It doesn’t bring true Joy or lasting Happiness.
This is the next life lesson (No. 46):
OUR SOCIETY ENCOURAGES TEMPORARY SOLUTIONS
We usually start with social aids that are acceptable to our local group & peers. First, we might try external stimulants to help us better cope at work: A cup of coffee, tea or cola to ‘start-us-up’ or keep us ‘pepped-up’ during the day.
Then to wind down sufficiently in the evening, we often resort to artificial relaxants: a drink or two of alcohol with friends perhaps, to help settle us down & soothe us. We may use a prescribed medical sedative or tranquilizer if we still feel too uptight or just not coping. Sometimes we take anti-depressants if we are feeling ‘too low’. This is done with a doctor’s prescription to verify its necessity & social acceptability.
