SOS BOOK - Chapter 1.11 Dissatisfaction is a crisis in slow motion
Some of us have had a major life crisis. Many more of us instead experience a CHRONIC DISSATISFACTION…A SLOW SUFFERING! Some in this ‘dissatisfied’ category view their life as ‘predominantly unsatisfactory’. They experience CONSTANT LOW-GRADE STRESS OR INNER TURMOIL.
A crisis in slow motion!
A bigger subgroup of dissatisfied people just ‘ lack inner peace’…
They’re NOT FULLY CONTENT and CAN’T FIND FULFILLMENT in their lives. They don’t understand the meaning of life and their purpose.
CHRONIC DISSATISFACTION IS A FORM OF CRISIS: a subtler type of crisis… AN UNRECOGNIZED CRISIS. Inwardly, people feel empty. Like having a deep void that can’t be filled! Nothing adequately fulfills or satisfies. They can progressively get more dissatisfied, frustrated and more disillusioned.
With chronic dissatisfaction, the external life-situation might not appear that difficult to an observer. It can be A HEIGHTENED INTERNAL PERCEPTION. The suffering seems due to hyper-sensitivity or some sensitization process. Sometimes there’s a coexistent feeling of existential angst or cosmic futility.
HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND TO CHRONIC DISSATISFACTION?
In practice, we tend to react in predictable ways. Often, we try working harder. This acts as a distraction and can provide material benefits. We promise ourselves various material rewards. We try special rewards, delights and even new relationships. However, this only temporarily eases our suffering. These distractions also come at ‘a cost’. Not just a financial one! The hidden expense is the waste of precious time & energy in holding back our deepest needs and desires. In doing so, we surrender our life’s true purpose! We miss critical opportunities to fully express ourselves...to blossom and fulfill our inner purpose. Our human life-time is finite, our health unpredictable and our energy limited. So, often our productive time is very short and should not be squandered. It’s important to use the correct strategy.
THE ‘SLOW SUFFERING’ FROM CHRONIC DISSATISFACTION IS AN UNRECOGNIZED CRISIS. It’s a subtle crisis in a low-grade grumbling form, often barely discernible in our busy lives. However, when we really try, we usually can recognize a pervasive feeling of discontent or disappointment. We may also realize a sense of emptiness or incompleteness in our lives. As it continues, we become more frustrated and disillusioned. It builds, slowly, but inevitably.
This is life lesson No. 38:
OUR LIVES ARE OFTEN IN LOW GRADE CRISIS WITHOUT US REALIZING
IN SUMMARY: We have explained the concept of ‘a crisis in slow motion’…living in constant stress or turmoil. We also explained that chronic dissatisfaction can produce a low-grade form of suffering which gradually builds. That’s another subtler often unrecognized form of crisis.
We also explained that most people deny or ignore the suffering resulting from general dissatisfaction with life. They usually divert their attention. They just distract themselves and compensate. This gives only a temporary relief, a brief respite from the suffering.
MOSTLY WE SEEK INSTANT REWARDS TO HELP COMPENSATE FOR OUR DISSATISFACTION.
These provide a short burst of instant pleasure. These give a transient “high”, like a sharp spike. This peak comes down very quickly and leads us to crave even more of the same. This instant reward scenario is ADDICTIVE and hence SELF-PERPETUATING. We therefore pursue temporary pleasures instead of long-lasting happiness.
This is life lesson No. 39:
WE TRY USING PLEASURES TO SOLVE CHRONIC DISSATISFACTION
