SOS BOOK - Chapter 2.9 Are you trapped in a trance?
What’s holding back our personal growth? Perhaps we’re trapped in a dream-like state and just don’t realize it... LIKE A MILD HYPNOTIC TRANCE! In this state we certainly aren’t asleep, but neither are we fully aware, or in control.
This pleasant mental state can tempt us, and so often we go along with it! THIS STATE PROVIDES A TEMPORARY MENTAL ESCAPE. We detune from an unpleasant situation or from the harsh & brutal world! This can also briefly ease our frustration or boredom. There is however a significant downside, which we will discuss! We can spend much of our life this way - and think it’s quite normal. Many people do!
RECOGNIZING THE WARNING SIGNS OF TRANCE…
How do we recognize we’re living in a trance state? What are the clues to realizing we’re not in full control of our actions & behavior? This can be very subtle!
First, our current situation might feel somewhat dream-like or unreal. It’s like we’re detached and not fully engaged. We might feel ‘spaced-out’ or mildly delirious. However, we still feel quite comfortable with all that! It can even feel mildly euphoric, so it becomes an easy escape or way out! The result is that our life seems mildly fake or unreal, like we’re living in a fantasy world. It’s as if someone else is directing our life script and we’re play-acting. It can even feel like we’re trapped in a second-rate or B-grade movie: not one that’s really engaging but still a pleasant distraction. We might even feel we can’t quite escape, but then again, we don’t really want to! This state is mildly pleasant and not too demanding! We don’t feel as responsible for what happens. Everything can seem pre-determined & pre-destined, so it doesn’t need much effort or effort.
WHY DO WE USE THIS TRANCE-STATE SO OFTEN?
We all can behave this way at times. But why is this dreamy mental state used by so many people so often? It does indeed provide a ready escape from the difficulty & dissatisfaction of our current reality. It can also be used to avoid both overwhelm & boredom. So, it’s very versatile!
WHAT’S THE DOWNSIDE OF THE TRANCE STATE?
The trance becomes a means of avoidance or denial. It just delays facing the tough issues & making difficult decisions. These include facing our dissatisfaction & our boredom. It prevents us from potentially doing something about it. We can even use it to avoid processing our emotions: those that surface to our consciousness to be cleared. This dissociative state puts our personal development and our life purpose on hold!
Technically, this hypnotic state is a subconscious survival strategy. In practice, it’s an ‘opiate’ that temporarily dulls our discomfort rather than one that truly solves or heals the problem. But we can’t grow spiritually if we are numb & opting-out! As with all opiates & powerful pain-killers, we can become reliant, dependent or addicted to this pleasant feeling. Once we get into this mental habit, it can be very hard to break!
HOW DOES THE TRANCE-STATE OPERATE?
This dreamy mental state is characterized by a brain-wave pattern & the release of specific endorphins. That combination allows us to ‘detach’ and ‘bliss out’. This mechanism is probably a variant of the ‘freeze response’ that animals use to numb themselves in situations of high stress & imminent death. Small animals characteristically use this when they feel trapped: when they can no longer use the fight or flight response of their sympathetic nervous system. When they have just given up! Do we want to spend so much of our life paralyzed and ‘frozen’ like a mouse, about to be devoured by a cat?
HAS TRANCE BECOME A LIFESTYLE OF CHOICE?
Sometimes we turn this mild ‘hypnotic state’ into a preferred lifestyle. Some people appear to spend much of their day ‘entranced' or mildly ‘spaced out’. Yet they are not using any illicit drug or chemical! The chemical cocktail of endorphins & chemicals is coming from within themselves! The result is they don’t function at full capacity. They can’t optimally connect with others, nor utilize the abilities & resources they have available.
THE HIDDEN ASPECT OF TRANCE!
You might find the above discussion interesting, but still not relate this your own lifestyle. Surely, we are not all living this way! Surely we aren't all spending hours ‘opting out’ in some mildly hypnotic trance, where we are more easily lead or persuaded? Think again!
Do we not spend many hours each day watching television or ‘glued’ to our computer screen? Are we not automatically responding to the sounds of our mobile phones, wherever we go? Do we not spend many hours each week mindlessly scrolling through social media feeds? Our brainwaves become entrained by these screens & devices as we will discuss shortly. The invisible Wi-Fi & telecom networks that empower them may affect sensitive people too. We are exposed to an electromagnetic fog!
ENTRANCED BY SCREENS & SOCIAL MEDIA
It is well known to researchers that all this screen-time modifies our brain wave patterns & our behavior. While watching television for example our brain waves more frequently enter an alpha wave pattern. This departure from our usual Beta-wave pattern makes us more submissive and open to influence! This is a variant of the mildly hypnotic or trance-like state previously discussed! Yet we expose ourselves to this behavior for hours every day! So, we are currently all entrained & entrapped to some degree in this pervasive social phenomenon: this world-wide experiment. The more we practise this entranced state through social media, the more automatic it becomes in our entire life and the more normal it feels.
WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE TO TRANCE?
Is there an alternative? Is there a healthier & much better way to live? Is there a superior way to face & solve our problems? Recognizing and avoiding the trance-state is the first step. Trance just numbs us in a ‘freeze response’ which only defers our difficulty to a later date. There are many powerful & positive alternative strategies. These are presented in this ‘SOS’ Book … so keep reading!
Many people don’t know how to utilize these powerful higher-order resources that we all possess. We are generally not taught these. In fact, we are discouraged from ‘meddling’ with our inner nature.
UTILIZING HIGHER AWARENESS & PRESENCE…
We are routinely taught so many unnecessary or useless things, but not how to command the power and remarkable resources of our higher-self. For example, we aren’t taught active visualization to promote & attract what we want to manifest. This is an active co-creative process rather than just passive opiate-like consumption.
HIGHER AWARENESS IS THE ANTIDOTE TO TRANCE!
Choosing to live in higher-awareness counters this dream-like hypnotic state. What is this state of ‘higher Awareness’? This is an alert but relaxed state of ‘elevated Awareness’. It can also be called ‘panoramic or ‘multidimensional’ Awareness’. This is different from simple cognitive awareness which is just limited to our 5 senses. The higher-order level of awareness can also be also termed ‘Presence’. That signifies being fully alert, aware and being fully ‘present in the now moment’.
A WAY TO BREAK FREE AND A NEW WAY TO LIVE!
Don’t despair if these technical terms sound unfamiliar or mysterious. We are simply ‘setting the scene’ for these and explaining why these concepts are important. We will discuss how to utilize these resources in subsequent chapters of this ‘SOS Book’.
